Wimmera people had a hands-on look at the Wimmera-Mallee's complex water system during a bus trip covering many of the region's major water storages.

Water-supply expert Bob McIlvena provided commentary during the outing, which included Mt Zero water treatment plant, near-Grampians lakes Fyans and Lonsdale, Bellfield Reservoir, lunch in Halls Gap, and then stops at Dock and Green lakes.

Rick Walker organised the trip, which attracted about 45 people from Horsham's Wimmera Village and other groups.

Mr McIlvena outlined timeframes for building the storages, use of horse and cart teams, the manual labour of hundreds of men who worked without heavy machinery, the building of containment walls, the initial cost and water flow over the decades.
