There are many reasons people call the police: suspicious behaviour, loud neighbours, and even missing livestock. But every now and then, the community dial in something truly wholesome.

The cutest traffic stop of the year: Horsham Police came to the rescue of a mother duck and her fluffy entourage attempting to cross Natimuk Road on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, November 25, a caring member of the public raised the alarm about a mama duck and her fluffy entourage attempting the most dangerous mission in the Wimmera: crossing Natimuk Road during peak traffic.

The Man in the Corner knows at knock-off time that it’s no place for hesitation, let alone webbed feet.

Horsham Police answered the call with gusto, and officers briefly blocked traffic in both directions.

Mama duck, recognising the significance of having her own police escort, strutted across the road with the confidence of someone who’d booked ahead.

Behind her, a trail of ducklings toddled along in single file, blissfully unaware they were holding up half the town.

Once safely across, the duck family quacked off into the distance, leaving officers to reopen the road and drivers to resume their day with a small, unexpected reminder that not all traffic delays are bad — some are downright adorable.
