It was a successful regional track and field championships for the Horsham Little Athletics Club in Warrnambool on February 15 and 16.

The club sent 21 athletes to the event, and 19 returned with medals that included 25 gold's.

President Peta Bond said the result was a reward for the continued growth of the sport in the region.

"I think it just shows how many kids are really enjoying their athletics and really doing well," Bond said.

"Athletics is definitely on the rise in Horsham. We've got the most numbers this year enrolled that we've had for at least 20 years."

And it was not just medals that were claimed in Warrnambool.

Jack Sawyer broke the under-12 400-metre region record, while James Burton set a new region record in the under-17 triple jump.

Athletes now turn their attention to the state track and field championships in Cranbourne on March 8 and 9.

"A gold medal guarantees you progression to the state championships," Bond said.

"Then the next best 23 times across the state also qualify.

"The weather wasn't great in Warrnambool, so our times were probably a little bit slower than average across the state, just because of the windy bay-side conditions."

Athletes will find out if they have progressed towards the end of the week

"I'd like to think we'd have maybe 15 athletes qualify," Bond said.
