Warracknabeal’s Alex Morcom has recently signed to the Essendon AFLW (Australian Football League Women’s) team for the upcoming football season.

Essendon announced its list of players for the next AFLW season on Tuesday, August 9.

Morcom and fellow footballer Lily-Rose Williamson will be replacing injured players Georgia Nanscawen and Eloise Ashley-Cooper ahead of Season Seven.

Morcom has played in the past two VFLW (Victorian Football League Women’s) seasons, averaging 10.4 disposals, 1.5 marks and 2.1 tackles in a total of 33 games, and finishing in the top three of Essendons’ VFLW best and fairest for the past two seasons.

“It’s disappointing to have Nanscawen and Ashley-Cooper ruled out for the season (due to injury) but we are excited to have Morcom and Williamson come on board and sign with our inaugural list,” AFLW contract manager Georgia Harvey.

“Morcom has been a dependable and hard-working defender in our VFLW program since its inauguration.

“We are very proud of her commitment to the club and this is a fantastic opportunity and one she has thoroughly earned.”

In 2018, Morcom found her footing at the Essendon Football Club and became a member of their VFLW team.

“To have been in the (Essendon VFLW) program has been pretty incredible,” Morcom said.

“As an individual, you’re going to develop your skills but you (also) have to work pretty hard.”

Morcom previously worked full-time at the Essendon Football Club underneath a dual role, working three days a week as an administrator in the men’s program, organising training schedules and games.

The other two days were spent as a community team member, running school programs and clinics. In these clinics and school programs, and just the general football world, Morcom has seen an influx of female players of all ages.

Season seven of the AFLW will begin on August 25 with a total of 18 teams set to battle it out on the field for premiership glory.

The AFLW began as a League of eight teams but has grown rapidly in popularity and reputation over the past five years.

The AFLW estimates that 600,000 participants and 67,000 women and girls play football each week in Australia.
