Rainbow P-12 College students are in the process of restoring their second car wreck to its original condition - and loving the challenge.

The Year 7 to 10 students take an elective subject called "Cars, cars, cars" and thanks to Greg and Wendy Sleep's donation of an old car, will begin work on the new project: a 1994 white Holden Commodore.

The students have already worked on a 1974 Toyota Cressida, donated by Peter and Jenny Solly, leaving half the car in its original condition, while restoring the rest in honour of another helpful donation from Kinchome.

Students used an English project aimed at bettering their writing skills to inform the tool company that their teacher Mr Robinson would be retiring soon and therefore they would no longer have access to his near-school garage or his expansive tool collection.

In response, Kincrome sent them $7000 worth of tools.

Mr Solly's father Merv bought the car for use by his wife Cora when she was unwell.

It was the first vehicle they owned with air conditioning and power steering.

Electives teacher Murray Robinson said the students were eager to again restore a vehicle.

"They're learning so much without realising they're learning," Mr Robinson said.

"Their enthusiasm for these projects is amazing.

"They start with a rusty old thing, and then continue on to completion."

Mr Robinson - who began teaching at Rainbow Secondary School in 1982, prior to the amalgamation - said Electives were popular with the students and included subjects such as fishing, agricultural studies, metalwork, military history, art, languages and simulated flying.
