A Mum's World: You had me at Fairy Festival

The spring rain has come, just in time to fill the heads in some of the crops, but very risky for all hay on the ground.

Raindrops dampened the ramp we rolled all the bag trolleys up and down carrying thousands of boxed books for our Book Fair on the weekend, but everyone stayed upright, and we raised close to $6000 for Chaplaincy.

Thank you community.

Thanks to the cute babies in prams, busy Mums with primary school kids, working Dads in high visibility shirts, teenagers roaming, adult grandchildren with Nannas and Grandads, those who’ve had the date circled in their diary for weeks and the people who just saw the sign on their way past.

Weather wise, the thunder kept our dogs in their beds Sunday morning and I’ve no idea how any baby birds have survived the wet and cold winds in the past week – even the ducks!

We are so absolutely reliant on the relative consistency of our seasons, aren’t we?

The fine tuning of our universe is the only thing that makes life possible at all – improbable perfection.

We have faith that our laws of physics will remain constant every moment and the mind boggles as to why mathematics is so unreasonably effective.

The universe had a beginning and continues to fly apart – thank goodness I have my Bible to explain it all, because I like to have my logistical ducks all in a row, particularly in inclement weather.

With a deliciously long weekend upon us now - for some - it would be sweet if the lawns at the Botanical Gardens in Horsham could dry out just enough for the Fairy Festival and food vans this Friday night when ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ is performed under the stars.

My girls will be home for the weekend and Shakespeare outdoors is definitely on our bucket list.

Katianna and Yasinta were cast as fairies in ‘Peter Pan’ ten years ago with the Horsham Arts Council and as a fan of fairies at the bottom of the garden my whole life, I had as much fun as them.

Our Botanical Gardens really are a national treasure – the original master plan was put together by William Guilfoyle who was a major figure in the history and design of botanic gardens across Victoria – including Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens.

How cool is that?

Our own Horsham gardens are home to trees planted in the late 1800s – gigantic English elms and oaks.

Recently I wandered through and read all the information about each garden bed, finally learning the names of plants that have been in my own garden for a decade.

I’m so proud of the beautiful space providing room to exercise, think and heal. Feasting on food van treats and laughing at the antics on stage will prove healing for me, I’m sure.

I’ll also practise gratitude and celebrate the dedication of the creative team who have poured their lives into providing a wonderful event for locals to look forward to.
